From Local Roots to National Success: The Rise of Louisville Kings Lacrosse

The Louisville Kings (known as Louisville Kings Select or LKS)  were originally founded in 2015 by Mike Havill and Van Boudreau to provide the best area lacrosse players and their families a platform for developing their individual skills and providing them an opportunity to be part of a highly competitive team.  Over the years the Louisville Kings have put Louisville on the lacrosse map.  The Kings compete nationally, beating teams from 35+ different states and winning tournaments all over the country.

Today, the Louisville Kings are under new ownership and have grown to 12+ teams, including high school programs, middle school programs, the Jr. Kings, and the Lil’ Kings.  The program has added programs open to any athlete to introduce them to lacrosse.

Frequently Asked Questions

OUR MISSION IS MORE THAN A STATEMENT

In today’s club sports world, you can read mission statements from any club program in any sport, and the reality is, they all say the same thing, they are all interchangeable. The brands on the page can be swapped out and are indistinguishable from each other.  These programs fail to live up to their mission statements, they offer more sizzle than steak.

Our approach is different. We believe in:

The Power of Working Together

We strive to work with other lacrosse leaders in our community and across the country to grow the game the right way.  We willingly collaborate with other like minded lacrosse programs.  We coordinate schedules with other local programs to ensure a tailored development roadmap and mitigate conflicts athletically, academically, and socially for our players.

As an emerging lacrosse market all have a responsibility to each other and to Louisville. With the full support of our coaches, players and families we believe in playing for their local program to grow and strengthen the game here in Louisville.

Pride in Building a local community

We believe in Louisville, growing our local community and developing local players.  The Louisville Kings embody the power and pride of Louisville’s lacrosse community—a collective driven by connection, support, and a common purpose. The unity goes beyond competition; its about all of us pulling together to lead and build lacrosse here at home.

We do not need to recruit kids from other markets or states to compete and win.  Any program that has kids from multiple markets makes you question their development process.

Finding players outside our market to win tournaments is the “easy button” approach. We would rather take the harder approach, the right approach and develop our local players.  We take pride in being a small market club and competing against larger markets with hired guns.

Local lacrosse programs provide a platform for players to showcase their best selves, where team continuity and chemistry matter. Our program is known for high IQ team play, where individual player skills can shine in a team environment.

The Development Process

Develop, Compete, Win, in that order, and you can’t skip steps. We start with a core group of young, athletically talented, multi-sport players and develop them over the years. Our staff is full of experienced coaches at the D1, D2, and D3 levels.  This is how we compete with bigger programs and larger markets.  Winning is important, but it’s not a win at all costs approach.  We focus on the development process.  This takes time, dedication, commitment, and trust from our players and families. Players will develop differently and at different times. We provide excellent training and playing opportunities no matter where a player is on their development curve. All players have ups and downs, and we are with them through it all, providing a platform and an opportunity to develop, surrounded by great coaches, a first class facility, and a local community who are vested in their success.

While players may choose to move between multiple programs to navigate the natural highs and lows of the development cycle, we believe that staying committed to the process within a single program fosters deeper, more consistent growth.

Many of our players do supplement their lacrosse development outside of Louisville, and we do support them in their endeavors, often helping them find opportunities.  During the year, our players continue to prioritize the Louisville Kings and stay committed to playing local for the Kings and growing the game here at home.

A Positive Experience for All

We recognize that travel lacrosse is a big commitment for families and we strive to make it a positive experience for all. We are committed to providing the most well organized team experience for our players, their families, and our coaches. We will strive to improve on our processes and program everyday.  We are constantly looking externally and open to new ideas to improve our program.

  • "For the player, Louisville Kings elevated our son’s learning and development beyond what we could imagine. Positional training opportunities were offered outside of team practices, giving him a chance to further hone his skill set. Mid-year and end-of-year reviews with experienced coaches helped him focus on his personal individual goals to help contribute to the team. An added bonus is that he made friends with some great kids outside of his school bubble."
